How to pack light for a trip

Big confession time: historically I’ve been a heavy packer.  I blame my mum for this habit (I’ve admitted to having a problem; I can’t be expected to accept the blame too 😉).  Recently, I’ve been trying to a become better, lighter packer.  It’s a work in progress, but I do think I’ve been better.

A few tricks that I’ve been using to become a lighter packer:

  • To help me stay focused, I use a checklist my husband created.
  • I make myself justify all shoes packed (I often put multiple pairs back).
  • I limit jeans, khakis, and other “bottoms”.  Honestly, I feel okay re-wearing these items.
  • Select light-weight items whenever possible.
  • Pack only what is need.  Seriously, only what is needed.
  • Remember most items can be purchased at your destination if needed.

Another trick is to purchase luggage that is bright-colored or with bright designs.  This makes your luggage much easier to find in the sea of black bags, briefcases, and satchels. I try to have multiple sizes to choose from, too.  This allows me to always choose the best sized luggage for the trip.  As with everything else, small, light-weight pieces of luggage are handy. Packing only a carry-on, especially a bag that will fit under a seat, is the ultimate goal…but who knows if we’ll ever get there!

My Trip Preparation Checklist lists our must-have carry-on items.
